  • Medication and mother's milk

Mar 26, 2012 Most medicines carry standard advice on their packaging and patient information leaflets, advising against use by pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. More often than not, this is because the effects haven’t been fully researched and evaluated. Dr Tom Hale, Professor of Paediatrics and Assistance Dean of Research at Texas Tech University School of Medicine, will be presenting the latest scientific advice around breastfeeding and medication during Medela's 7th International Breastfeeding and Lactation Symposium in Vienna, Austria, from 20-21 April 2012. He suggests that whilst women should seek advice from their doctor and other reliable sources, the manufacturers’ instructions should not always be taken at face value. Initial research conclusions show that not all medication should be stopped, and effective alternatives can be taken, particularly in relation to anti-depressants and anti-psychotics. more on Medela intl. website

  • Stem Cells in Breastmilk

Nov 9, 2011 The theory developed in 2007 by scientists at the University of Western Australia (UWA) that breastmilk contains stem cells has been taken to a higher level with the latest discovery by one of the team’s newer members: UWA PhD student Foteini Hassiotou has proven that stem cells from breastmilk can now be directed to become other body cell types such as bone, fat, liver and brain cells. Could this finally be the answer to ethically and easily obtaining pluripotent stem cells in a non-invasive manner? And what does this mean with regard to the unique power of breastmilk for the growth and development of babies? more on Medela intl. website
