Intimate moments - leisure time with your baby
Rebekka Schuyler, Oosterout, the Netherlands, mother of one child
When I started to breastfeed, I was slightly concerned about Emma getting enough milk. I wasn't able to estimate how much she would drink. I was told that my baby would have a stomach as large as a golf ball when she was ten days old. I had no idea how small that really is.
How to breastfeed
The midwife visited me regularly once I had left the hospital. She told me I should observe the number of full nappies, the amount of weight Emma gained and how lively she was. For a new mother, these guidelines on how to breastfeed are extremely helpful, as you simply don't know if you are doing the right thing.

To breastfeed means sharing intimate moments
And then I discovered how it was to breastfeed. In my opinion it is the most wonderful experience when you can breastfeed. It is an utterly personal moment between Emma and I. I was able to switch off and concentrate on her. Then I wanted my husband to participate in this special moment.
My husband started to feed
Of course, my husband wasn't able to breastfeed. I spoke to a midwife and she recommended a breastpump so that he could feed Emma with breastmilk. That was a great idea, and it was lovely to watch my husband feeding Emma.
Our family became closer
My husband became more self-confident and relaxed when dealing with Emma. This strengthened the relationship between them. We became closer as a family. To breastfeed means developing a very special bond.
